Daws looking to Cook up title triumph

Morden favourite Lenny Daws admits he is preparing for a war after announcing the first defence of his British Light-Welterweight title this week.

Daws will face former European Lightweight champion Jason Cook at Bethnal Green on February 12, stepping between the ropes for the first time since flattening Barry Morrison in September.

And the ‘Morden Mauler’ is expecting a tough test against his Welsh opponent.

Daws said: “Jason is a very strong fighter and it is certainly not going to be an easy night.

“He is a former European champion and a quality operator and he has bags of experience.

“I will have to be very careful in this fight, but then again you could say that about every fight you have.

“But I know what I have to do and I have another solid month to prepare.”

Daws took the hermit’s approach to Christmas, maintaining his punishing training schedule and side-stepping the festivities.

And the 31-year-old reckons it will all pay off in the long run.

He added: “It is all about how I prepare.

“I have been training solidly - I don’t drink or anything like that and I took it easy over Christmas.

“I feel fine and in good shape - I will be stepping up my sparring now and I have plenty of videos of Jason to study well so I will be totally ready.”

With his previously-stated desire to claim a Lonsdale Belt driving him forward, 2010 is set to be a big year for Daws.

And the British champion says it is time to make his mark.

Daws added: “If I can get through this and then make one more defence a Lonsdale Belt is mine and that would be huge.

“This is a big year for me and I aim to make a big impression.

“2010 is a massive opportunity and I have to make it count.”
